Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of what he does and it certainly influences my writing. But I don’t want to have that same audience. I’m not competing for Ultra Culture’s followers, I’m just writing what I think will amuse people. Surely not everyone who writes sophisticated, elaborate reviews of art house cinema is copying The Guardian, for example.

Trust me, I’d like to be one of those guys! I’m not doing this professionally at all, I have to pay for 95% of the stuff I review on here. Hence the posts about my disappointment with EIFF – it’s a nice chance for ordinary people like me to enjoy the premieres – and Red State – which I will now admit was a knee jerk reaction out of disappointment.

However, I’m impressed that you know my writing, regardless of whether you like them or not. And I do appreciate the criticism.

I’d say that your trying to make film fans smile or laugh makes it clear that you are definitely following Ultraculture, since he’s the highest profile blogger doing that schtick, and most film blogs have a different goal. As for screeners, fair enough: I’d thought you were one of those reckoning that bloggers were entitled to get screeners of everything and got upset when they didn’t. But it turns out I was thinking of your Red State incident and your comment about only going to EIFF for the premieres, which weren’t quite about the same thing.

I’m a big fan of Ultra Culture and I agree that Charlie does better ‘pointless bollocks’ than anyone else in film journalism. But I’m not trying to compete with him or anyone else. I just want to make film fans who stumble upon on my blog smile or laugh. I’m sorry I couldn’t do so on this occasion, but I hope you’ll come back in the future and enjoy something else.

As for seeing this in advance and for free, no, I probably wouldn’t have. I very rarely choose to see anything that I’m certain I won’t enjoy. You can see that in the ‘cinema releases’ box to the right I have avoided Journey 2, for example, despite the face there was an advanced screening of that.

See, Up In The Air and Juno both disappointed me. I found the former to be a little conventional and the latter just tried SO hard to be ‘indie’ and ‘quirky’. So I was surprisingly pleased to find that Young Adult was so fresh and upfront. And I loved that about it.

I’m looking forward to seeing it again. I scored it 4/5 on first viewing. Up in the Air and Juno were 5/5. This is the kind of film that could grow on me though.
